Spread and transmission
How avian influenza virus is spread
Bird flu is mainly targeted at wild birds, especially water birds. The birds habituated in water areas such as lakes, rivers etc. carry avian influenza . The ill bird, could spread the virus in its feathers, mucous and saliva. The birds’ intestines carry avian influenza then are released into the environment via bird droppings (faeces) . Migratory birds that are corrupt with this virus could spread the bird flu to any location or country they visit.
Currently H5N1 strain has reverted illnesses and death to some wild birds. The avian influenza virus kills birds, such as chickens, wild geese and turkeys.
This disease can be passed on to birds that are in direct contact, or carried onto contaminated objects in farming such as cages, clothing or food.
Bird flu is not common to humans , but there is still a possible chance for people to catch the bird flu . They can catch it they handling infected poultry, contaminated with faeces, saliva or feathers from other infected birds. There has only been rare cases of the bird flu being passed from one human to another. There is currently no evidence stating that the bird flu has spread from human to human yet. Health experts from research are worried that the current bird flu will spread worldwide mainly affecting parts of Asia, Middle East, Africa, and Europe, only if the virus does mutate. From past history, The worst influenza that was ever occupied was the 'Spanish flu', it first occurred between 1918–19 and death toll was raised up to 50 million people.
