The risk of catching bird flu for humans is rare. You can be at risk if you face close contact with birds that are already infected . To avoid catching this disease avoid areas habituated with most birds, places like farms and bird markets, especially countries with most outbreaks of bird flu. On a regular basis if you touch animals hand washing is important, especially after dealing with handling animals or birds. Where outbreak of bird flu occurs, countries have brought in culling of poultry to help stop the outbreak from spreading. Medications can be given to help prevent those have caught bird flu virus
Useful tips of how you can prevent the bird flu:
- avoid visits to animal markets and poultry farms
-avoid acquaintance of contaminated bird droppings and surfaces
-don't handle live birds, don't pick them up (dead or alive)
-don't eat under cooked or raw poultry
-always have personal hygiene eg. such as washing your hands regularly
